Interspecies Future: A Primer
2024
Published by: Distanz & LAS
This interactive reader is the first book to provide an extensive foundation of key concepts, debates and case studies that propose ways to re-frame, repair and re-imagine interspecies relations. Drawing on recent advancements in planetary computation and machine learning, new discoveries in non-human intelligence, as well as post-human theory and Indigenous knowledge, Interspecies Future: A Primer outlines some of the most transformative developments that are poised to shape new approaches to interspecies thinking.
Equal parts theory and practice, the publication assembles contributions from scientists, technologists, philosophers, and artists that offer both critical/concrete and abstract/imaginative propositions. The texts are brought to life through interactive augmented reality animations designed by Wang and Söderström, as well as video, audio and 3D content from artists and scientists. Interspecies Future: A Primer includes writings by artists James Bridle, Tomas Saraceno, and Agnieszka Kurant, the geneticist Daniel Chamovitz, the professor of evolutionary ethnology Mirjam Knörschild, the philosopher and animal rights activist Sue Donaldson, the design theorist and philosopher Benjamin Bratton, and others.
As Editor with K Allado McDowell and Julia Kaganskiy, we developed the book structure, curatorial approach, featured case studies and individual entries. As Managing Editor this also included briefing contributors and designers whilst editing texts, selecting images, liasing with graphic designers and AR developers. Interspecies Future: A Primer is a strategic development pathway, leading on from the Interspecies Future Symposium held in Berlin in summer 2022. The symposium set out to mark the beginning of a multi-decade civilisational journey in advancing the new rights and opportunities for nonhuman life on Earth, made possible by the emergence of planetary-scale computing. The symposium gathered minds from the fields of biology, life science, computer science, animal rights, policy, and creative practice to help define the Interspecies discipline and set pathways to bend the evolution of AI towards nature. The two-day event was co-hosted by Light Art Space (LAS) and The Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.
